PE Uniform

It is departmental policy that all pupils wear the correct attire, not only for the health and safety of themselves and others, but also for school identification purposes.

Due to the varied selection of activities offered by the department there are two different uniform types required by both boys and girls:

Girls Kit (PE Activities - Indoor)

  • White polo shirt or T-shirt (black embroidered school badge)
  • Black shorts
  • Clean white trainers
  • Black/navy plain one piece swimming costume
  • Towel
  • White socks

Girls Kit (Games Activities - Outdoor)

  • White polo shirt or T-shirt (black embroidered school badge)
  • Black sweatshirt (school logo) or black/navy sweatshirt of drill top *
  • Black/white hockey socks
  • Black shorts
  • Football or hockey boots *
  • Trainers (old pair)
  • Black/navy plain tracksuit/jogging bottoms *

The items marked with an asterisk * are optional items, all others are compulsory items.

Pupils are advised to clearly label all kit with their full name, and to keep their kit together in a sports bag.

Use of the Sports Complex

Sports Hall

The school has full use of the sports hall during school hours (9am - 3.45pm) including break times and lunchtimes. It can be booked from 4pm - 5pm free of charge (this is usually used for fixtures and/or practices)

Swimming Pool

In order to use the swimming pool, it must be booked one term in advance. The school has priority over other schools in the area. The spring term is often used to accommodate swimming lessons.

Fitness Suite

The department submits a block timetable booking to the manager of the sports complex, which must be presented half a term in advance. The school also has priority of the fitness suite during wet weather (regardless of any bookings)


Aims and Objectives

Introductory Statement

In education we are concerned with the development of mind and body. Physical Education within schools should be seen as an integral and important part of the total education process. The subject provides the unique opportunity of enhancing the physical experiences of the pupils.

It is considered that the personal and social qualities developed, including cooperation, competition, self discipline, leadership, perseverance and self esteem are essential to the development of a well rounded personality. It is through Physical education that many pupils can find the success which may elude them elsewhere and thereby gain in personal confidence.

Objectives of the Physical Education Department

The objectives are directly related to the aims of the department:

Staff should provide a variety of experiences/activities during a course of study and during lessons, e.g. games, gymnastics, swimming, indoor and outdoor activities; individual and group activities; problem solving; communicating ideas by means such as verbal, listening, and appraising; practicing and refining a skill; using repetition in order to improve. Staff should encourage pupils to share their experiences with others to enhance the quality of learning. The learning experience of the pupils through out the school should enable them to continue to participate and be active after they leave the school. As a result it is vital that throughout their time at John Beddoes pupils experience a wide range of competitive and non competitive activities in an enjoyable and productive learning environment in order that they can find their niche and continue to be active after they leave school and throughout their lives.

The National Curriculum and G.C.S.E. requirements are used as a basic core for the scheme of work. In conjunction with such material, rules, vocabulary and game skills such as attack, defence and fielding will be taught. Staff should encourage pupils to recall and apply their knowledge and skills in familiar and unfamiliar situations.

Pupils should be able to follow both verbal and written instructions accurately. Safety is further enhanced by emphasis of: the need to wear the correct equipment; to follow and obey rules; how to lift, move and carry heavy objects and equipment; the importance of warming up, cooling down and recovery.

Lessons should be conducted in a secure, supportive and disciplined manner. The pupils and staff should interact in a manner that demonstrates mutual respect. Pupils will learn the rules, etiquette, laws and codes for various activities.

Staff should encourage pupils using reward systems, certificates, sports awards and record of achievements. This should encourage pupils to work to their full potential and to experience a sense of achievement.

Philosophy of the Physical Education Department

With the development and advancement of technology, and the introduction of game systems and an array of various electrical accompaniments, it is important that we do not become a nation of passive spectators. With a consequent degeneration in our physical health, as many people as possible should be persuaded to indulge in some form of participation in an enjoyable physical activity.

In the Physical Education programme we must try to interest everyone in one or more activity to such an extent that they will work to carry the participation on into adult life. In order to achieve such as end we must include a sufficient variety of activities, increasing towards the upper end of the school, so that as many individual interests can be catered for as possible.

Aims of the Physical Education Department

The aim of the Department is to provide an interesting, challenging and enjoyable programme of physical activities for all pupils irrespective of their natural abilities.

1) To develop control, coordination, awareness and mastery of the body through a variety of worthwhile experiences, that allow pupils the opportunity to develop their own skills in all areas of body management, creative and aesthetic movement. With opportunities being made available, and involve, all pupils regardless of ability, interest of sex, gender or ethnicity, to include individual and team games, athletics, gymnastic activities, health related fitness and swimming.

2) Physical Education enables pupils to understand and use safe practice and to appreciate it’s important in P.E.

3) The provision of a balanced programme for all should be carried out with the aim of developing physical abilities to the full, with opportunities for pupils to achieve physical excellence through quality learning experience. Competitive sport provides an important opportunity, which enables pupils to measure personal achievement against that of others as well as providing powerful motivation for those committed to it. Played within closely defined rules it also helps in the development of cooperation and sportsmanship, which will be essential if the pupil is going to be able to make a worthwhile contribution to society in life after school.

4) Through Physical education we aim to develop in pupils an awareness of the value and the needs of an active and healthy lifestyle, the complete acceptance of good sportsmanship and fair play, the ability to cope with both the success and failure of oneself and others, and the skill and confidence to appreciate and take advantage of opportunities provided in the wider community.

5) To enable pupils to be familiar with a body of knowledge, principles and vocabulary related to P.E.

6) It must be participation and not merely the achieving of high standards, which is the main aim of the physical education teacher.

7) To enable pupils to develop a range of desirable personal qualities such as politeness, perseverance, initiative and independence.

8) To employ teaching methods and resources that that allow all pupils (irrespective of gender, ethnic origin, and academic ability) to have equal access to P.E., and to experience success and enjoyment in their work.
