GCSE & Key Stage 4
GCSE Physical Education
A GCSE in Physical Education is available as part of the main school option system in Year 10 & 11. It is taught over 5 one hour lessons a fortnight, of which two are devoted to theoretical components of the course, and three lessons to practical aspects.
The school follows the WJEC Examination Board. Theoretical aspects contribute to 40% of the overall mark, with 60% awarded for practical elements. Pupils are marked in many sporting activities over the two year course, with four marks finally submitted for examination purposes. The majority of the practical activities are catered for in school although it is possible to participate ion sports in which facilities are not available (liaison with staff and clubs).
Practical assessment is a continual process throughout the course. Generally each half term is devoted to a block of work (one activity). Due to the vast nature of the activities, often pupils are taught in mixed sex groups.
Written assessment comes in the form of two final examinations (one video paper and one written paper). Two staff are available to teach this component. Thus, the GCSE group is divided into two relatively equal sized groups. Groups are established according to their SAT's score or are taught in mixed ability group (depending on the staff in question and the year group).
Key Stage 4
In Key Stage 4 we aim to expand the range of activities available to the pupils and to give greater choice and encourage them to concentrate on the sports they enjoy. At this level they are expected to organise their own tournaments, umpire and adjudicate their own competitions, and be more responsible for their own learning and development. Acclivities on offer vary according to facilities available and the number of staff timetabled.
Pupils in Year 10 & 11 are often taught in mixed sex groups, and given the option to participate in an indoor or an outdoor activity.
