Home Economics - Key Stage 3

Year 7 - Textiles

In this unit, students tackle a design and make a project in the theme of 'cushions' in which they design and make a decorative, personalised cushion. It is aimed to give students an opportunity to and experience in approaching practical issues, analyse requirements and to carry out appropriate practical skills/tasks and activities which have direct relevance to meeting the needs of everyday living in households.

Year 8 - Food Technology

A largely practical based unit, with the aim of developing student's skills and understanding of the methods and properties of materials/ingredients and how they apply when working and designing with food. Course activities are focused on particular skills, knowledge and values using of methods. The course involves practical and some theory work with focused tasks devised at providing opportunities to develop skills, understanding and knowledge. The importance and process of the evaluation of food pictures is also taught. This is done using sensory evaluation so giving consideration to the aesthetics of foods e.g. appearance, taste odour, texture and how these affect the consumer's choice.

Year 9 - Food Technology

Students tackle a design and make assignment on the theme of 'biscuits', in which they design and make a new and appetising, healthy biscuit for a chosen target group of customers. To help them develop their design ideas pupils make prototypes which they evaluate and modify before selecting their final product. They then look at packaging and marketing their product. Students are taught to recognise and explore needs and wants that can be met through design technology activities, to develop ideas about how these might be met and to develop products that meet those needs, drawing on developing understanding of product development and utilising a growing repertoire of skills and knowledge. They are taught to develop design and technology capabilities through combining their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding ion order to design and make products.
